Who runs this

A Few Good Films (afewgoodfilms.co.uk) is run by Simon Norton, who decides how your information is used. To reach me, use the contact form.

What I store about you

• Your account: your email address and your short name, the name you go by in groups.
• If you sign in with Google: Google shares your name, your email address and a link to your profile picture. I keep them with your account record. I don’t show the picture anywhere.
• Your groups and activity: which groups you are in and your role, the films you add, your pitches and pleas for them, your reactions, what you have watched, the streaming services you pick, your notification settings, and the notifications shown in the app.
• Sign-in records: the IP address and browser details of your sign-ins, kept by Supabase’s sign-in service.
• Contact messages: your message, plus the name and email you choose to give.

Members of a group can see your short name and the films, pitches and reactions you add to that group. People outside the group can’t.

What I use it for

Only to run and secure the app: signing you in, keeping your groups and lists, sending the emails described below, and answering your messages. I don’t sell your information and I don’t use it for advertising.

Emails

• Sign-in links, when you sign in with your email.
• A daily digest about new seasons of shows you follow and new recommendations in your groups. It is on by default, and you can switch either kind off under Settings (“Email me about new seasons” and “Email me about new recommendations”).
• Messages you send through the contact form reach me by email, and I may reply to the address you gave.

Who else handles your information

• Supabase stores the database and handles sign-in.
• Vercel hosts the site. It also provides anonymous page-view and performance statistics: the page visited, referrer, approximate location (country, region or city), browser, operating system, device type and speed measurements. These are not tied to you or your IP address and use no cookies. To stop spam through the contact form, Vercel BotID also checks browser and device signals when you send a message, solely to tell people from bots.
• Resend sends the emails.
• Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
• TMDB supplies film information and posters. Posters load from TMDB’s servers, so TMDB sees your IP address, as any site would when you load an image from it. I send TMDB the titles people search for, but nothing that identifies you.
• YouTube, if you hover over or tap a poster to preview a trailer. The trailer plays in YouTube’s player, which connects your browser to YouTube (Google). It may set its own cookies and collects data under its own privacy policy.

Cookies and storage

• A sign-in cookie, so you stay signed in. The site can’t work without it.
• A cookie that remembers which group you were looking at.
• Display preferences stored on your device (whether to hide the TMDB rating and whether to show age ratings), and a temporary marker for the loading screen that never leaves your browser and is cleared when you close the tab.

None of these is used for advertising or tracking. YouTube is covered above.

How long I keep it

For as long as you have an account. Contact messages are kept until I delete them.

Your choices, and deleting your account

You can ask to see the information I hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. You can change your short name yourself under Settings. To delete your account, send a message through the contact form asking for it, and I will delete your account and the information linked to it by hand. Contact messages aren’t linked to your account, so say in your message if you want those deleted too.

If you are unhappy with how I have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
